Erwan Falls

Erwan Falls, Kanchanaburi, 6/27/11

Remember those old Super Nintendo games where you advance through levels, each one progressively more challenging and whimsical? If you combined that same excitement with the picturesque beauty of a stunning national park, you'd have Erwan Falls.

Located about an hour outside Kanchanaburi, the site means "Elephant Falls" in Thai as several of the falls resemble elephant faces. There are seven waterfall "levels" in total, set among an dense inclining rainforest of roughly two miles. We're here in the morning, led through the jungle by an affable, effeminate Thai with the build of Santa Claus. (It should be noted that his colleagues at the travel agency call him "The Fat Man" behind his back. Fat Man, if you are reading this, you should find a better place to work). He is assisted by plenty of wild jungle monkeys. Each waterfall is distinct and they get increasingly more stunning as one ascends through the jungle. Tata, Lexi and I stop at half the falls to swim in warm, cyan blue ravines and stand under the falls, water pounding down on our heads. We're joined by large blue and black butterflies, the size of playing cards, who perch by us and furiously consume the morning dew.
